Drop #1: Planet Drop

March 2018  – This is the first sculpture of approximately eight in the series. Concept development started about 10 years ago and has gone through many considerations. Part reclamation, part new materials, it’s intended to be both a passive and active art piece. Passive in that its affect on a space is meant to be seamless, attractive but still soothing.  Neither dramatic nor incidental but a prescient and attractive deconstruction of time’s observation of nature.

Active in that it’s alive.  It’s designed to rotate as it carries light and life. With Marimo moss, growing at a stunning rate of about 5 mm per year and Tillandsia at a similarly slow pace.

Care of the sculpture is a deliberate pastime. While all parts are inherently durable their unified existence is a minor practice in complex balance.  You can begin this process with a large Tillandsia and coax it into blooming.  Or start with a young plant and nurture it to find its own way to occupy the sculpture.

A variety of plants have been provided as have instructions and components for different methods of installation. It’s been constructed for easy, nearly ready installation.  However at another time you may choose to install it differently.
